I teach 3rd grade religious education at church and presenting my lesson with graphics is more lively. But I did encourage them to know the word and spell it so I gave them a chance to write the word/s on the board. And I find it very productive. I remember as a child most kids would grab a comic to read before anything else. it was fast & visually entertaining. and since most people interact with texting (I am not on that wagon yet) and email/web short hand, spelling will not be a must pass test. Thank goodness I have spell check, LOL! I do enjoy images woven within a story or short text. Because I teach English and try to get students to speak proper English with the right pronunciation. The more they listen the better the result. I combine listening, reading, writing and speaking. When I was a middle school teacher the graphic novels in our library could be considered light porn. It floored me to see little boys reading these with the blessing of the librarian. I hate those cards on how to get out of an airplane, and it took me a year to figure out that the first drawing on the instruction for putting in an insulin pump set (a rouded-edge rectangle) meant "wash your hands.)Sue Ann Bowlinghttp://homecomingbook.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1535525493775623042.post-72021393549435208612011-08-30T19:00:11.737-07:002011-08-30T19:00:11.737-07:00So informative and thought provoking. So this new type of graphic novel is quite interesting to me. My grandson is going into grade 2 and can read (well!) but just doesn't like to...so I'm checking into finding something suitable for him (age-wise) in the graphic novel format. I went to Chapters on the weekend and was looking through the section but there isn't much for the younger child just yet. A lot of violence, supernatural, and just plain scary stuff out there right now. But if I keep looking, I'm sure I'll find something just right for him. Thank goodness, his little sister loves books! :D

Leslie
abcw teamLeslie:https://www.blogger.com/profile/11964698251137788839noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1535525493775623042.post-53926606531874398052011-08-30T13:18:48.932-07:002011-08-30T13:18:48.932-07:00Hooray, some one else who struggles with graphic i...Hooray, some one else who struggles with graphic instructions. But in terms of learning I'm very word oriented. Graphics work for me from an aesthetic stand point but it's hard for me to follow them from an informational stand point.
