They help all of us refocus and regroup. They can motivate and replenish. They help hone attention, relieve stress and reinvigorate relationships and perspectives. They allow our brains to take in, reshuffle, organize and expand.
Breaks are important for kids in and out of school. Between classes, breaks help kids consolidate and filter what was just taught in class, and breaks at home help them focus better on homework. Breaks are also important at work, home, and school as they help alleviate hand and finger stress (from keyboarding and writing), eye stress (from reading and computer work), and back and neck stress (from prolonged sitting). Breaks are also great for promoting creativity and helping overcome creative or writer's block.
To bring this home, here's a wonderful distraction, compliments of Volkswagen. - their "Bark Side: 2012 Volkswagen Game Day Commercial Teaser"
... It picked me up considerably and will make you all INFINITELY happy!
What is worth barking about in your life?

ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious. I couldn't believe it when the melody started coming through. Fun break. Carver, ABC Wednesday team member
ReplyDeleteTerrific smile BREAK for me. So clever. I definitely need to take one now. I have been sitting for far too long at this crazy computer.
ReplyDeleteBYE!
I saw that just the other day and howled with laughter! You are so right that we need to take breaks to relieve all sorts of things. One thing I remind students when they leave after a tutoring session is to take a break from whatever subject we were working on before they go back to tackle what's left of the work.

We try to practice a 'no barking zone' here at home! But, yes, breaks are important to take throughout the day. More than most would give credit to, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteSurprising how rejuvenating a break can be, wise advice. Love those dogs.
ReplyDeleteHow I need those reminders to take a break every now and then! The barking dogs make it a smiling break as well! :)

Kids have plenty of spare time and breaks for play and creativity. As far as I am concerned the school system stifles individuality and creativity.
ReplyDeleteThe commercial makes me laugh. I saw it the other night on tv:)
Have a great weekend.
Found you on the Hop... glad I stopped by... now following and looking forward to reading more
ReplyDeleteBew follower via Friday Blog Hop. here is my blog : http://masalabowl.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeletelove this! Since I'm barking all the time, mostly at my children. But I DO SO agree with you about breaks, especially for kids who are so scheduled these days. Yes, they focus ar better in school if they're allowed a little boredom. Some autonomy in figuring out their own things to do. We seem to be terribly afraid of boredom, but in those little spaces kids have a chance to dream and create, so essential to their development. Sorry to harp but you hit on a strong point for me! Like your blog so will follow. Was visiting from milkshake!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and joining the Stumble me Friday hop! I've stumbled you and hope you join us again next week :)
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH!! I LOVE THE VIDEO!! I seriously can't wait to show it to my son once he gets home. In fact, I think I may even have to share it on my FB page. We LOVE Star Wars in this house. (In fact, my Wordless Wednesday post was several pictures of my son making different faces in the Yoda robe I had made for him.)
ReplyDeleteAlso LOVE that you have a PhD and that you're a blogger! I'll graduate with my JD this May and can't wait to join you as a professional mommy/blogger! ;)

I was just talking with a friend about breaks for our Kindergarteners. They go a full day now at age 5 and her little girl said, "Mommy, it's just too much. I'm done with school." Your points on children learning better with breaks is absolutely true. We all need time to process what we've learned and let our brains do some behind the scenes work, while we 'rest'.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog!
That video is awesome! And so is taking breaks. I know I'm much more creative when I take a break once an hour or so, even if it's just to get up and walk around.
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up with the Getting to Know You blog hop!
Love the video! I completely agree with the idea of taking breaks. We can only hold our focus for so long before we need a few minutes to relax and regroup!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and linking up to the GtKY hop!
That video was very cool! And I agree with taking breaks since it helps us (and our children) cope with life's. Dropping in from the GTKY weekend blog hop.
