Music and Why we Need It ...Everywhere

Found at wallpaperscraft.com
As our schools fight over budgets and programs, here's why music may be a mistake to cut...OR conversely, here's why as teachers, educators and parents we need
to find a way to put music into our lives and our kids lives:

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. ~Plato
Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the sour what a water bath is to the body. ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes
If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. ~Gustav Mahler
Music is the universal language of mankind. ~Henry Wadworth Longfellow, Outre-Mer
Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music. ~Jimi Hendrix
All music is folk music. I ain't never heard a horse sing a song. ~Louis Armstrong

  1. of course, i never listen to music, never write about music, don't know or care about music, as you well know. right?

  2. As a folk music lover, I liked the Louie Armstrong quote.

  3. Thank you for this important post. Music. is the soul of life. In one of the Japanese concentrationcamps for women there were two very talented, very musical ladies. They managed to find a group of women who wanted to join a choir. In spite of the fact that there was hardly any paper, they found enough of it to write down several pieces of classical music for two or more voices like soprano and alto. They did it by heart and it was excellent! The choir. sang without words and it was so beautiful that the singers and listeners forgot the hunger, the pain, sadness, suffering. , if only for a short time. The result was that many women were encouraged to stay alive by this music. There is a movie about this group of women.
    Have a great week, Meryl.

  4. The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra shows how music changes lives (and is wonderful to listen to) and confirms you premise that budget cuts to music are a mistake.

  5. I love music and know how important it has been in my life. Great post for M!

  6. Beautiful thoughts about a beautiful topic - music. Thanx

  7. Love that Armstrong quote!!! Those are great infographics too. I'd never heard of dailyinfographic before, but I'm off to check them out right now. Do you get annoyed with the daily e-mails? I think they might be worthy of subscribing to.

  8. I was so interested to read lately about the part music can play in restoring speech to stroke victims. Such a wonderful and lovely part of our lives, as well. I am so happy to see it encouraged and supported in our schools here.

  9. Good post. In addition to what Hildred said about stroke victims, music has been shown to help alzheimers patients. Music is so important to our lives, and anyone who wants to cut it is obviously tone deaf or -- sadly -- has never been touched by a beautiful piece of music.

  10. Thanks for a great post. I have recently rediscovered my love of classical music & had forgotten how wonderful it is to listen to. It helps that I needed to replace my headphones & treated myself to some better quality ones as well :)

  11. Music is so important to our family, my husband is a guitarist, I sing in our choir and its so fulfilling. Just last night we went to our granddaughters first concert of the year. She plays the violin and also there was a choir recital. She is excited for both.
